Rav Gav is one of Jewish Chaplaincy’s longest serving chaplains and works with university students around London. He arrived in the capital in 2000 after serving as the Chief Rabbi of Ireland and working as a rabbi in three other Jewish communities. Born in South Africa, he’s raised five sons and also has three grandchildren.

Why chaplaincy?

I enjoy working with students and supporting them during this important time in their lives.

I would encourage students from all walks of life to get involved, attend more events, run events themselves, and encourage other students to participate in student activities.

How can you help students?

Supporting them with issues related to their University. Supporting and facilitating student events like campus lunch n learns, fresher meet n greets, stalls at start of term and bar crawls. Other events like the Chanuka ice-skating event, London Booze for Jews, London Ball, evening party events, Friday night dinners, Café Hillel informal shiurim – there’s so much going on!

I also help promote Jsoc activities and ensuring their success.

What do you enjoy doing most with students?

Being together, chatting and sharing. I enjoy being their confidant as a friend and not a parent.

What do you want students to take away from their Jewish experience at uni?

Become more Jewishly conscious and confident.

Who or what has influenced your work?

My father’s role as rabbi on three continents has been my inspiration.

What prepared you for this role?

I’ve served as the rabbi of three communities and as the Chief Rabbi of Ireland. I worked as a Bnei Akiva madrich and cheder teacher prior to that and my father was a rabbi.
